Mission
Wall Dances
Jo
Kreiter/Flyaway Productions
For
those of you keeping score, this is only the second review of a dance
performance on MoeCain.Com. I'm not the expert on body movement
(if you've been to one of my parties, you know this), but I will say I
am impressed with dance today.
Jo
Kreiter has created a unique niche for herself by taking modern dance
and combining it with modern ways of fighting gravity. Her
previous performances have included dance poles, industrial cranes,
catwalks, and window ledges. The Mission Wall Dances incorporate a
brilliant new mural painted by Josef Norris, a well matched score by
Pamela Z and some rope work to humble the most extreme climbers at
Mission Cliffs (a local climbing wall).
I
strongly encourage everyone in the Bay Area to stop by and see this
performance. You will sit on the sidewalk or asphalt driveway of a
municipal railway parking garage and watch performers scale up and down
the concrete facade. It's about 40 minutes of dance, music and
thrilling feats portraying the terrible 1975 fire that destroyed the
Gartland Apartments at 16th and Valencia. The fire was one of many
of that time that forced many longtime residents out of the Mission
district and signaled the beginning of the displacement that is still
happening today (although much slower now that the dot com boom has
busted).
Since
the subject of the dance is a traumatic fire, there is a somber tone to
the movement and score. Be warned, this isn't Disney on Ice.
What it is, however, is a unique, FREE, opportunity to see a renown
expert of this artform. Take it in, it is worth it.
NOTE:
although this performance is free, donations are welcomed (and I
encourage that) and CDs of the score are on sale as well.
